A small oil painting of a whelk on wood panel. The oranges and pinks of the inside of the shell are highlighted through their contrast with the almost monochrome colours of the outer shell and background. Soft light touches the whelk and table. This detailed study is homage to the field of taxonomy which gained renewed interest in the new Dutch Republic of the 17th century, partly inspired by scientists including Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) who had further developed the microscope.
