Reine Claudes are an ancient plum variety named in honour of Claude (1499–1524), the Duchess of Brittany and queen consort of King Francis I of France (1494–1547) (Source: Wikipedia). When holidaying in Tuscany in August 2015 I bought these plums from a greengrocer in the sleepy old hillside village of Fivizzano. Back in our villa in nearby Pian de Molino I scattered the plums onto a table to catch them in the Tuscan afternoon light. This sketch is a study in preparation for a larger oil painting on linen, which I will have with me at the Reading Contemporary Art Fair in April 2016.
