The brilliant blues of the humble fig are celebrated in this small painting using mainly lapis lazuli, the deep blue semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense colour, in the Middle Ages regarded as the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments (see: Wikipedia). This important legacy makes for exciting painting sessions, the brilliant blue bringing out the best of the fig skin.
